Beyond the BASICS
Frequently Asked Questions

When does Beyond the BASICS before/aftercare begin and end?

The Program will begin on the first day of school and close on the last day of school. Beforecare is 7am-8:20am. Aftercare is 3:30pm-6pm.

How does Beyond the BASICS operate when there are school closing and inclement weather?

The program closes when Bridges PCS closes or when DCPS cancels afternoon activities. These include holidays, winter and spring breaks and weather related closures. *We attempt to go out in all-weather but exceptions are made for very rainy, very hot, or very cold days.

What does inclusion look like in the aftercare setting?

No student at Bridges will be turned away from the program because of special needs. The aftercare program will be focused on social interactions and play. We will teach a social skills lesson each day that will benefit all children. Then we will practice the skill throughout the day. Play time will be facilitated so that everyone is participating and included. See Parent handbook for more details or click on the link to your right.

Will snacks be provided during aftercare?

Snacks will be provided by Bridges. Please ensure we are aware of any food allergies. We are a junk free food program. Students are not permitted to eat outside of snack time.

Are outside providers allowed to provide services during aftercare?

Outside therapists are encouraged to come and support their students in the Aftercare. Outside therapists must follow all Beyond the BASICS policies.

When is tuition due for Beyond the BASICS and how much is it?

Tuition is due on the 1st or the 15th via ACH. For additional pricing information, click the link below.

Sample Schedule for Before & Aftercare

Beforecare Programming

• 7:00AM - 8:15AM - Check-in, reading, coloring, yoga/stretching/meditation

During this time, staff will greet students and offer the chance to join in playful yoga and stretching activities or they can read or color.

Aftercare Programming

• 3:30PM - 4:10PM - Check-in, snack, and indoor play

During this time, Bridges staff will pass over the sign-in sheet with any notes they have from the day that would be helpful. Students will sit at tables and be served snack provided by Bridges PCS. After a student has finished eating they will throw away their food and be allowed to play in centers. This will be unstructured play with adult presence to guide as needed.

• 4:10PM - 4:30PM - Social skills lesson and fun activity

Each lesson will be about 5-10 minutes and will include one discrete skill (examples: asking a friend to play, a type of compromise like you first then me, responding to a feeling). Lessons will be modified from establish social skills programs and also original content. After the skill is described a fun game will be used to practice the skill. All students will benefit from this lesson.

• 4:30PM - 5:30PM - Outdoor play*

Students will have free play time on the playground. Trained staff will facilitate interactions on the playground. Each staff person will have assigned students to check in on during the playtime (typically between 1 and 5 students). During check-ins they will prompt and support use of the skill taught in the lesson. This time period is a combination of structured and unstructured play. Students that need more support will be guided through activities. Since students do not have IEPs in Aftercare, these supports will not be data driven but will be thoughtfully applied. Progress will be communicated to parents informally.

• 5:30PM - 6:00PM - Homework or reading time

HW time will be provided. It is helpful if parents remember to send packet back and forth to aftercare since students primarily use packets. If a student does not have HW, they will be asked to grab a book to read for DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time. Staff will walk around the room to support students as needed and encourage quiet interactions with books. Staff will not support students academically, but will encourage study skills such as sitting and attending to work. If a student has read for 15 minutes and is finished with HW or does not have homework, they will be encouraged to draw or write until pick up.
